68 year old August Dupree is past his prime. One day he discovers a blue Volkswagen bus in his driveway. Inside he finds a sealed box and a letter from an old childhood friend asking him to take the bus and the box to New Orleans. Feeling bound by his friend's dying wish, he convinces a close friend to take the trip with him from LA to New Orleans.
